Southeast Asia and Transpacific Studies Group

The Southeast Asia and Transpacific Studies group brings together a diverse, multi-disciplinary
community of scholars across UCSD to discuss the distinct theoretical and methodological challenges of
working in the Asia/Pacific region. In particular, we seek to develop new analytic frameworks which take
seriously the diversity of indigenous forms of knowledge, agency and experience, both within and
outside Southeast Asia and across the Pacific. In so doing, our group is part of a larger movement to
innovate and move forward from the area studies model. Southeast Asian and Transpacific experiences
and knowledge are at the center of inquiry, but this regional focus welcomes useful comparative and
contextual content. Our group meets twice a quarter to discuss canonical and contemporary texts, in-
process research by participants, and host external speakers.
